Hagan attended Northwestern University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in speech in 1983. After college, she appeared in regional theater productions in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Chicago before moving into film and television work. Her acting career began in the mid-1980s with roles in films such as "Code of Silence" (1985) and "Some Kind of Wonderful" (1987).
